What is the
difference between gold-plated and gold-filled? Gold-filled
jewelry is often times confused with gold-plated jewelry. But the
difference in quality can be significant. Gold-plated is a term that means there is
gold over the top of a base metal. It can be low quality, with small
amounts of gold. While cheaper, gold-plated items will not last as long
as gold-filled. Gold-filled
jewelry is required to have a minimum gold quantity of 1/20th the weight of
the item. This means that gold-filled jewelry is more uniform in
quality. Gold-filled is 50 to 100,000
times thicker than regular gold-plating, and about 17 to 25,000 times thicker
than heavy gold electroplate. With
proper care, your gold-filled jewelry will last a lifetime. I’m allergic to
some earrings I’ve tried. How can I be
sure I can wear yours? One of the more common metal allergies that customers may have is an
allergy to nickel. People with slight nickel allergies can usually wear
surgical stainless steel for a few hours, or possibly all day.
Nickel-allergic people can wear sterling silver, gold, nickel-free, or
plastic ear findings. Glassy
Ladies’ earrings have either sterling silver or gold-filled findings. What are findings? Findings is the generic term for metal jewelry
components — bar pins, posts, charms, earring wires, etc. How do I know how
