About Dichroic Glass |

What is
dichroic glass? Dichroic
means ‘two colors’ and by viewing each piece in different light and at
different angles one can best appreciate its dancing colors and vivid
luminescence. It was first developed
by NASA for use in the space industry.
Artists were quick to realize that its depth of color and iridescence
made it a perfect choice for jewelry and art glass applications. Although it was developed about 20 years
ago, there are still only a handful of manufacturers today. The glass itself is made in vacuum chambers
where from 15-45 ultra-thin (3-5 millionths of an inch!) layers of metallic
oxides are vaporized and condensed onto the glass surface. It is then kiln fired at extreme
temperatures. Next, at
Glassy Ladies, we carefully cut and layer different colors and textures of
dichroic glass and art glass and fire it in our kilns to temperatures as high
as 1500 degrees F. To achieve a
specific result, sometimes a piece is fired more than once. Then the glass is slowly cooled at precise
temperatures for many hours producing a strong, brilliant result. |
